The shift towards a car-lite city is essential for reducing congestion, improving air quality, and enhancing urban livability. This lecture presents some of the recent research works performed at the National University of Singapore in exploring strategies for promoting sustainable transport modes, such as electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, public transit, cycling, and walking, and how they can be effectively integrated into urban-transport planning. Electrification research on optimal charger location design problem and case studies on conversion of fleet to a fully electric vehicle fleet shall be discussed in the lecture. Design for cycling and active mobility from both theoretical and actual planning case studies to enable a car-lite built environment shall also be presented. Integrated urban-transport planning models using both big data approaches and actual town planning case studies are also discussed to illustrate the gaps and opportunities for transport and urban planners. Last, the lecture shall highlight some of the future research directions that can be considered for societal impact.
