前 言

Foreword

With the passage of time, there are always gazes that pierce through the hustle and bustle, using lens as pens to inscribe the temperature and heartbeat of the times.Hu Wugong,Pan Ke, Xie Aijun,Peng Xiangjie,Huo Yan and Su Sheng - six photographers deeply rooted in the vast land of Shaanxi - have created a visual epic about soil, people, and transformation through their decades-long observation. Their lenses serve as both prisms of the times and containers of life.

This exhibition is a dialogue about “presence”. You can view the desolate poetry of the Loess Plateau captured by Hu Wugong’s lens, contemplate the dispassionate deconstruction of urban fringes by Pan Ke, enjoy the magical distillation of everyday life by Huo Yan, see the wanderers navigating societal currents through Peng Xiangjie’s lens, observe the poetic archaeology of industrial civilization ruins captured by Xie Aijun, and savor the interrogation of modernity dilemmas by Su Sheng. These six photographers, though each with their unique visual language, share a common spiritual undertone: a passion for truth, a reverence for life, and a loyal commitment to witnessing historical moments. Their works refrain from glossing over realities or indulging in sentimentality. Instead, with a blend of stern warmth, they train their lenses on the dust kicked up by the wheel of time to capture the figures stumbling forward amidst the rural-urban divide, the faces forgotten in the cracks of modernization, and the souls struggling between tradition and modernity.

Shaanxi Province Art Museum has gathered the representative works of six photographers in this exhibition, which not only serves as a review of the documentary photography landscape in Shaanxi Province but also attempts to use imagery as a medium to pose an eternal question: In the rapidly changing contemporary context, how can art fulfill the dual mission of documentation and reflection? Each ray of light, every texture, and every fleeting expression in these photographs are shadows cast by the times, as well as measurements of humanity taken by the photographers through their lenses.

Here, we invite viewers to embark on a visual “field study” to reach those frozen fragments of time through the lens of these six photographers. Perhaps, as we gaze into these images, we will suddenly realize that what we call an era is merely the symphony of countless individual destinies. And the power of photography lies in giving those silent voices the opportunity to be heard once again.
