BEIJING, May 20, 2006 (AFP) - After 13 years of immensephysicaleffort and technical ingenuity, China Saturday put thefinishingtouches to its controversial Three Gorges dam, the worldslargesthydropower project.
The 2,309-meter-long (7620-feet), 185-meter-high block ofconcreteacrossthe Yangtze river is meant to control floods andgenerateelectricity for a power-hungry nation, but for manyChinese it isabout much more than that.
The Three Gorges dam is excellent proof of what Chinesecanaccomplish, said Cao Guangjing, vice president of theChinaYangtze Three Gorges Project Development Co. This projectwillserve to inspire the Chinese people.

三峡大坝轴线全长2309米，最大坝高185米。这个跨越长江的钢筋混凝土大坝将防洪发电，并且能够缓解中国的用电紧张。

Although the dam is now complete, we still have a long waytogoand cannot become self-satisfied or relax our efforts intheleast, Li Yongan, general manager of the Three GorgesProjectDevelopment Corp., said at the ceremony.
