我眼中的中国

　　（以一个亚洲人的视角，基于真实的历史和经历）

　　我的名字叫 Sigit, 39岁，现在居住在印度尼西亚的巴厘岛。我来自爪哇岛中部最大的城市之一三宝垄，我在那里出生并长大成人，直到24岁才离开迁往巴厘岛，是一名电视台记者。

　　三宝垄是爪哇首府，同时也是重要港口。不足为奇，一直以来推动并支撑这个城市经济发展的是工业和贸易部门。三宝垄是印尼华人的重要聚居地，而且这里的重要贸易部门通常都是由华人掌控的，即使这里曾有许多痛苦的往事，即使在他们内心有着挥之不去的梦魇，我并不确切的明白这其中的故事。

　　屠杀华人的悲惨事件发生在大约25年前，上个世纪的80年代初期。直到现在，我都没有真正明白事情的原委。

　　记得那时我是13岁，还在上初一。我看到许多华人的商店被捣毁和焚烧。我并不理解为什么三宝垄会突然发生这种事。总共有数百家店铺被烧毁，而我始终不明白为什么被毁坏全部是华人的商店。

　　那段日子，三宝垄的局面混乱不堪，黑烟四起，整座城市就如同战场。当夜晚降临，供电被切断以后，三宝垄就变成了一座恐怖的黑暗之城。在这之后，学校也被关闭了。这也是我为什么可以亲眼目睹那些恐怖事件并对此记忆犹新。

　　这场发生在我的家乡，针对华人的可怕灾难发生在25年前。但对我来说，虽然许多年过去了，仍然无法忘记。直到现在，我都很难理解为什么这一切会发生。

　　我写这篇文章绝不是为了揭开伤疤或者激发种族冲突的情绪。那场噩梦已经成为历史，同时也是印尼华人铭刻于心的重要一课。

　　虽然我没有做过特别的科学调查，但对于那次事件我能够得出一些结论。当然，这些结论或对或错，它们都是基于我当时对事实的观察得出的。

　　首先，由于误导产生的仇视华人的情绪直接导致了事件的发生。原因就在于经济上的巨大差距。华人过着上流社会的生活，这是因为他们控制着重要的贸易部门，所以可以过上好一点的生活，而这些也被其他种族看在眼里。

　　第二，现在，我所看到的华人的生活是趋于排外和孤立的。虽然他们试着同其他人一起生活，但是在日常生活中，华人看起来在自我孤立。

　　再次声明，这些结论虽不是基于调查，但却是通过观察和亲身经历得出的。所以，这些结论需要经受检验和证实。

　　由此，我得出了进一步的推论。在我看来，印尼华人自我孤立是源于中国政治经济形势对其的影响。就像我们所知道的，过去的中国是与国际社会相隔绝的。结果，海外华人的行为和态度也直接受到这种政策的影响。虽然中国从1978年起开始了改革开放，但情况不会因此而有那么迅速的改变。

　　另一方面，如今，中国在经历了25年的改革开放之后，我看到这个国家取得了巨大的成绩。即使在苏联解体后，中国仍作为平衡美国霸权的重要一级。中国的国际地位也不断提高，中国人在世界舞台上得到了普遍的尊重。中国已经成为了世界上最具魅力的国家，吸引着每一位来访者。

　　令人惊讶的是，有着广阔疆域和庞大人口数量的中国，居然能从孤立的局面中复兴并且成为世界舞台上有着强大影响力的角色。她的影响力不仅仅局限在经济领域，还有政治、工业、旅游业和体育方面。

　　作为一名记者，我十分钦佩中国在国际关系与合作中所扮演的角色。在处理国际关系方面，中国有着很强的外交能力。简而言之，中国现在已向世界证明了，成功可以通过自我激励和不懈的努力达到。

　　但是，我的脑海中仍然有很多疑问，中国这种巨大的转变是否能够影响海外华人的行为和态度？25年前的悲剧是否可以避免发生？我是否必须要等待25年才能证实我的推论的正确性？

　　这就是为什么我不再有美国梦而选择我的中国梦的原因！

　　China in my eyes and my mind

　　(In sight of an Asian, based on true story and experience)

　　My name is Sigit, 39 years old, I live in Bali – Indonesia. I am from one of big cities in Middle Java, namely Semarang. I was born and raised in Semarang until 24 years old and then moved to Bali. I have been working as a television reporter in Bali now.

　　Semarang is the capital city of Middle Java and has a harbour. It is not surprising if wheel of economy in Semarang city is much supported from industry and trade sectors. I also do not know in certain how its story was, why many society of Chinese ethnic live in Semarang city and they usually dominate trade sector. Even after there was an event and a night mare occurred to the society of Chinese ethnic, especially those who live in Semarang city.

　　This traumatic event happened about 25 years ago, at the beginning of 1980s. Until now, I do not really understand what happened with this event and why happened.

　　At that time, I was about 13 years old and I was in the first grade of Junior High School. I saw many shops of Chinese ethnic burnt and plundered. I did not know and understand why Semarang society attacked and burnt these shops suddenly. Total shops burnt and plundered were approximately hundreds of shops. They normally attacked shops along the protocol street in

　　Semarangcity where there were found many big shops. I, however, did not know in certain whether all of these shops belonged to Chinese ethnic.

　　At this day, Semarang city was so disorder and tense. A black smoke appeared everywhere and Semarang really in chaos situation. I did now whether they involved in burning and plundering, or just wanted to see the event closely. In the night, situation of Semarang city was horrible and dark, as the electricity off. And the day after that, schools were closed. As schools closed so that is why I can see closely the destruction taken place and always remember about this event.

　　This nightmare tragedy occurred toward society of Chinese ethnic in my hometown has indeed been about one fourth century ago. But for me, it is not easy to forget it. Until now, it is hard for me to understand and know why all of these must be happened.

　　This article is not intended to open old memory or to motivate sentiment among ethnics at all. That nightmare event is a past history and must be an important lesson for Chinese ethnic in Semarang in more specific and in Indonesia in general.

　　Although I do not conduct a special scientific research, I can propose some conclusion from this event. Of course, conclusions can be true or false, as I made conclusions based on my observation and facts at that time.

　　Firstly, this event happened as the result of misled issue to hate Chinese ethnic. The reason can be that there was a gap of economy. The society saw that life of Chinese ethnic was above average. In fact, it is natural since Chinese ethnic dominated trade sector, so it possibly had a better life.

　　Secondly, now I can see the life of Chinese ethnic tending to exclusive and isolated one. Although they have tried to live together with other society, but in daily life Chinese ethnic seems isolated themselves.

　　Once again, that these conclusions are not based on research, but they are on observation and fact occurred at that time. So that is why these conclusions need to be examined and proved its validity.

　　From these conclusions, I am interested to discuss about the latter or the second conclusion. According to me, why society of Chinese ethnic seems isolated themselves, it is because of under influence of political and economical situation of country origin, China. As we know that China, indeed, closed itself from international relationship at that time. As the consequence, it affected behaviors and attitude of Chinese ethnic society who live abroad, such as Semarang. Although China itself has conducted reformation and opened itself toward international relationship since 1978, not all can automatically changed instantly.

　　On the other hand, now after more than 25 years China opened itself toward international relationship, I can see great advantages for this country. Even after no longer Soviet domination, China is to be a balance power for the super power country like United State. In international situation, Chinais always considered by countries all over the world. Now China has become one of the biggest magnetic poles in the world, that is able to attract what and who visit China country.

　　It is surprising, with its biggest population in the world and so wide area, China can revive from its isolation so far and to be a country having strong influence all over the world. It is not only in economic field, but also in political, industrial, tourism and sport ones.

　　As a reporter, I am so admired to observe the role played by China in international cooperation and relationship. China has strong bargaining power in international relationship. In a short word, China has currently proved that success can be achieved by high motivation and work hard.

　　There are, however, still some questions in my mind, whether such changing in China country will affect behaviors and attitude of China ethnic abroad? Whether 25 years tragedy will not happen toward Chinese ethnic in Semarangagain? Whether I must wait for 25 years onward to prove the truth of my conclusions?

　　That's why I don't have an American Dream anymore but changing to my Chinese dream!
