Brief synopsis:Hua county is a major agricultural area county with a population of 1.2 million people. With a limited land space to support such a large population, its economy is underdeveloped. In recent years many local people have migrated away from the area to improve their lives. Some have left home and rented farming land in other places to grow cotton. Madam Wang is an ordinary farmer. She followed others to Jinhai county in Tianjin and rented 60 mu of land to grow cotton two years ago. She made an unprecedented income of over 100,000 RMB in the same year. The Hua county government was convinced that farmers could become rich through working on the rented land and they encouraged many farmers to leave home and seek new opportunity. Under the influence of this micro-environment, Madam Wang increased her rented land area to 220 mu in Jinghai county this year, but things changed. Madam Wang suffered a setback at the outset with renting charges doubling, followed by the exploitations of the local land trader. Tennant farmers have to buy pesticides and fertilizers from the land traders, who inflate prices. In addition, land traders charge profit commissions when it comes to selling the cotton. What took farmers by total surprise was the low cotton price which started at 1 RMB below the previous years price and continued falling. Despite the preferential policies stipulated by the state, the favorable weather conditions and a bumper cotton harvest, Madam Wang saw no increases in her income. The experience this year gave Madam Wang the first taste of a market economy and inspired her to have a breakthrough in her thoughts about development. Traveling thousands of kilometers in a year, the filmmakers give us a comprehensive insight into the hardships, frustrations and hard work of farmers in central China. The heroine, Madam Wang has a unique personality which reflects the changes of life, thoughts and concepts of ordinary farmers in China. From the selection of the characters in this film through to the photographic angles, this film has achieved great breakthroughs when compared to other television productions.
