Brief synopsis:This film portrays 12 years in the life of Claudia’s stay in China by exploring her career, family, emotions and reflections on life. Claudia is a French lady, living and working in China. Heading south from Beijing, she settled in Guangzhou in 1994 and has worked as a designer, trader and translator. At the beginning of 2004, she resigned from the French Consulate Generals office in Guangzhou to manage a bar and club by herself. Materially, Claudia is a successful woman who established her own career in a foreign country. But emotionally she is alone with a five years old daughter by her husband who deserted her. Lost in her emotional world, yet still full of expectations, Claudia finds it difficult to open up to people around her.
This groundbreaking film focuses on a middle aged French woman’s life in China rather than falling into the trap of discussing cultural differences whenever depicting a foreigner living in China. With a backdrop of the hustling and bustling city of Guangzhou, this film faithfully portrays Claudia’s life in a foreign country, twisting and turning but with no regrets. The flow of this film is simple and smooth. The camera is focused on an ordinary life and reflects on the strong and romantic personality of the heroine. The beautiful diverse pictures and amazing lighting are a unique feature of this film. The scenes change as the characters move to different locations. The lighting and composition of the space are carefully considered to achieve a picturesque effect. Music is harmoniously mixed with the scene to enhance the theme of the film.
