Brief Synopsis:In the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, the city thought to be the oldest civilized settlement in the world, there’s not much to do. Leila is an Iranian refugee who got stranded in neighbouring Iraq. Complaining about the lack of personal development she says: “What can I do for myself, except go to the gym and take care of my body?” She has become the trainer in the only women’s gym in the region. The Iraqi Workout follows six women inside and outside the gym. The film focuses on their individual lives and not on the anonymous deaths of the news headlines. Their stories add some missing pieces to the jumbled puzzle that is Iraq today. Leila is our guide during the 47 minutes of the documentary. She gives us a tour through everyday life in the city and the lives of some of the women that go to the gym. The women were willing to talk despite significant risk for their lives if the film is shown in Iraq or Turkey. The relation between the women and the filmmaker is spontaneous and dynamic and provides the film with a unique format. The Iraqi Workout doesn’t limit itself to any specific subject. It is not trying to prove anything, give a conclusion or open a debate. The aim is to catch the atmosphere and the spirit of these women who want to be pretty in a country where beauty is under threat. The Iraqi Workout is an engaging routine designed to exercise your perspective. Are you ready?
